Object of Desire: Stone Island Shadow Project
Dynamic, innovative and effortlessly cool, Stone Island X Shadow Project’s designs are crafted from exclusive, cutting-edge fabrics with a distinctly urban aesthetic. Expect nylon and silk blends, high-definition jacquards and water-resistant jersey cut into sporty silhouettes.
Stone Island’s strength lies in its unique capacity to work on the finished garment, via continuous experimentation with dyes and treatments created in the Sportswear Company’s colour laboratory. A department capable of combining advanced technology, experience and human capacity, that over the years has developed more than 60,000 different dye recipes.
And it is streetwear at it's finest. with clothes with unique lines, pockets, zips and the details, always the details. After unveiling its 2017 fall/winter collection Shadow Project collection last month, Stone Island has now released a lookbook giving another view at the collection from its super technical range. The range’s key features include different forms of pocketing. Highlights include the ‘Metallic Mist Treatment’ which adds a matte shimmer to pieces and laser engraving that is used on leather, David-TC and suede to reveal graphic contours through negative space.
Stone Island is known by its compass patch that buttons onto the upper sleeve of the left arm.
Originally the patches were green edged, badges from around the year 2000 onwards became black edged. There are also a run of rarer 'white badges' which were originally made on certain jackets to celebrate the new millennium. The white badge is now apparent on jackets that use materials that Stone Island develops themselves in-house. Novel jacket designs include the "Liquid Reflective" jacket, that uses thousands of small shards of glass that reflect light.
A culture of research, experimentation, function and use are the matrices that have always defined Stone Island: the sportswear brand established in 1982 in Ravarino, in the Modena area, by the genius that is Massimo Osti, Art Director and Bolognese intellectual.
Within just one year Carlo Rivetti came onto the scene. Having bought, with the GFT, 50% of Osti’s company in 1983, he took over the whole of the company in 1993, with his sister Cristina, promising the continuity that over the years had reinforced the DNA of the brand.
Stone Island Shadow Project began as a discourse between owner and creative director Carlo Rivetti and the design team of Michaela Sachenbacher and Errolson Hugh, also known as ACRONYM®.
As a platform for exploration, the Shadow Project rapidly evolved into a system based program for a new generation of urban masculine apparel.
Thanks to Stone Island’s incredible historical archive, and its unparalleled forward development resources, ACRONYM® sought to conceive a project according to their strong technical and performance based roots.
The result is a unique and unprecedented fusion. A fresh and intelligent new light cast upon the timeless interplay of form and function. Calling the project Shadow underlines the intimate relationship and interaction between this work and the full body of the Stone Island collection.
One our our favorite items from the new collection is this rather cool printed SS catch pocket t-shirt in black. Short sleeve T-Shirt in Mako cotton jersey. Printed and overdyed. Catch pocket, with ‘safe drop’ side entrance on chest. Graphic motif on sleeves and lower front and back. Very cool and £155.00
And of course they produce some darn cool video lookbooks, check them out:
